Shell Provides Integrated Energy Solutions to Hong Kong Baptist Hospital in Strengthening Sustainability Measures

Shell Hong Kong Limited (Shell) offers Hong Kong Baptist Hospital (HKBH) with a package of integrated energy solutions, including provision of Shell Biodiesel B5, installation of the first electric vehicle charging station at the Hospital and deployment of the “CO2 Offset Programme”, to strengthen the Hospital’s sustainability measures in reaching carbon neutral target.

On October 27, 2022, Shell and HKBH held a CO2 Offset Programme and EV Charging Station Launch Ceremony. At the ceremony, representatives of both parties signed a CO2 Offset Programme Collaboration Agreement. Shell is committed to providing HKBH with high-quality carbon credits to offset those unavoidable life-cycle carbon emissions of diesel consumed by the boilers and assist HKBH to achieve carbon neutral in the use of boilers.

Since July 2022, Shell has been collaborating with HKBH and the Hospital has switched to Shell Biodiesel B5 as fuel of their in-house steam boilers. The hot steam generated by the boilers will be utilised for medical equipment sterilisation and hot water supply. Shell Biodiesel B5 is composed of 5% biodiesel and 95% of diesel, which is mainly produced from locally collected waste cooking oil. Compared with conventional regular diesel, biodiesel can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through lowering the overall CO2 emissions on a well-to-wheel basis .

In addition, HKBH has participated in Shell’s CO2 Offset Programme to compensate the remaining unavoidable carbon emissions using Shell’s global carbon credit portfolio. It is expected that HKBH will be able to offset a total of 572 tonnes of carbon emissions from the use of diesel in boilers through the CO2 Offset Programme in the next three years. The carbon credits come from CO2 compensation projects around the world, including nature-based solutions such as conservation and afforestation, and projects from other methodologies. The projects contribute to the avoidance and removal of greenhouse gas emissions which are verified by international recognised carbon standards, such as the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards.

To cope with an increasing demand for EV charging facilities in the Hospital, HKBH set up their first EV charging station with the assistance of Shell. It is located on the 1/F of Block C carpark consisting of three AC medium chargers with a charging speed of 7kW. A high amount of usage is recorded since its operation in October due to shortage of such facilities in nearby areas. In the future, the Hospital may install additional charging stations for EV as needed, and continue to support and promote more carbon reduction measures to contribute to environmental protection.

Mr Dick Chan, General Manager of Commercial Fuels of Shell Hong Kong Limited, said, “the collaboration with HKBH is highly in line with the Group’s principle of carbon reduction, ‘Avoid, Reduce and Compensate’. He expects integrated energy solutions will help HKBH to drive towards sustainability in these three aspects.” He also said that the collaboration demonstrates Shell’s determination to energy transition in recent years. Shell is capable of providing other energy-related solutions to business customers in addition to supply of fuels, for instance carbon reduction consulting services and installation of EV chargers.

In view of the collaboration, Ms Grace Wong, Director of Administration and Planning of Hong Kong Baptist Hospital expressed, “Our Hospital has always been applying the concept of sustainability in daily operation. Yet this novel collaboration with Shell in sharing our common vision allows us to adopt a holistic approach not only to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emission, our patients, visitors and staff are given the opportunity to experience the advantages of consuming renewable energy too.”

To celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2023, HKBH commenced the construction of a 30-storey East Kowloon Medical Centre alongside with its planning of the Hospital old blocks redevelopment project with the application of smart technology and sustainable measures, so as to provide top-notch medical services to clients. Shell expects further collaboration between two parties in the future to help drive the energy transition and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
