Introduction

Lung Function Test

The Hong Kong Baptist Hospital Lung Function Test evaluates how well one’s lungs work and the data is presented on a chart called spirogram, which helps diagnose lung diseases, measures the severity of lung problems and checks the effectiveness of treatment on lung disease.

Scope of Services

  • Spirometry: measuring the amount and speed of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. The test is helpful in assessing conditions such as asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and COPD, it is also effective in assessing fitness of lung before operation.
  • Gas Diffusion Capacity/ DLCO: studying alveoli gas exchange function and is useful in diagnosing certain lung diseases such as emphysema, interstitial fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension.
  • Lung Volume: studying the volume of air inspired into, expired from or stayed in the lungs during breathing.

Preparation

Preparation Before the Test

  • Normal diet is allowed;
  • Please consult your attending doctor to see whether you should stop taking any of your medications such as bronchodilator before the test; and
  • Bring your own medications, e.g. inhaler and accuhaler.

 

During the Test

  • Patient sits comfortably;
  • Patient needs to breath through a mouthpiece which is to be held tightly with his/ her mouth and lips; and
  • Patient must follow the instructions of medical staff to complete the test.
