Endoscopy refers to the procedure of putting an endoscope (tube or capsule) into patient’s body through natural openings (mouth or anus) for screening, diagnosis and treatment of various gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases. Patients with various gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic and pulmonary diseases can be easily treated with non-surgical endoscopic methods.

Hong Kong Baptist Hospital (HKBH) first introduced endoscopy service in 1992, its Endoscopy and Endosonography Centre at D3 is staffed by a team of experienced doctors and specially trained nurses to deliver professional endoscopy services, one of which is a negative pressure room for bronchoscopy examination and x-ray procedure room.

Advanced Equipment

• All procedure rooms are equipped with the latest model of CV 1500 high definition video endoscopy system and narrow band imaging (NBI) system for early gastrointestinal cancer detection. The advanced endoscopy system and new endoscope provide more refined image quality for better diagnosis and effective treatment.
• Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) system, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), capsule endoscopy system for non-invasive oesophageal, small bowel and colonic examination, and a single balloon enteroscopy system for treating complicated small bowel diseases. The new technology Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (ENB) system could help doctors to diagnose lung tumors earlier and identify the specific stage.
• With the introduction of “artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted endoscopy system” in 2024, early stage gastrointestinal cancer lesions diagnosis is further enhanced.
• With the EndoCapture System, doctors may capture high definition images by pressing the preset control buttons on the endoscope during examination. The report can be easily produced with quick analysis of patient’s condition.

The Centre’s equipment reprocessing zone adopts the theory of our internationally accredited CSS Department, with clear division of four zones, including Dirty Zone, Reprocessing Zone, Clean Zone and Disinfected Equipment Store. Used endoscopes are first thoroughly disinfected, transferred to the Clean Zone, and finally entering the Disinfected Equipment Store for complete drying and storage in controlled-environment storage cabinets. This uni-directional workflow safeguards patients’ health by raising the infection control level.
