Introduction

Pathology Department

The Pathology Department provides high quality clinical laboratory services, which undertake investigations on specimens from patients as an aid to assist in diagnosis, management and treatment of patients. It also provides specialist interpretation and advice.

Since June 2020, our histopathology service has been accredited by the HOKLAS.  Details of our accredited service can be found on HKSAR government Innovation and Technology Commission’s website here (https://www.itc.gov.hk/en/quality/hkas/doc/scopes/844P.pdf).

The various disciplines of the Pathology Department provides services as follows:

  • Blood Bank
    24 hours blood transfusion and blood grouping are available for any transfusion services.
  • Haematology
    24 hours CBC and coagulation tests provide a general health study for anaemia, infection or blood malignancy.
  • Chemical Pathology
    • Biochemistry – provides services of Renal Function Test, Liver Function Test, Glucose, Lipid profile, C-Reactive Protein, Lipase, Amylase, anaemia investigation by using Iron study, B12 and serum folate tests. Immunoglobulins Profile, Thyroid Function Test, various reproductive hormones, cardiac markers and cancer markers etc.Many urine and fluid biochemistry tests are available.  The urine micro-albumin / creatinine ratio can be used for detecting the earliest stage of diabetic nephropathy; estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is for early detection of chronic kidney disease.
    • Immunology – Autoimmune disease investigation, such as Antinuclear factor, Anti-dsDNA, Anti-ENA etc., Hepatitis panel, Allergy panel and HIV antibody detection.

    We also collaborate with other referral laboratories to provide a wide range of tests for screening or diagnosis. Such as Non-invasive prenatal Testing (NIPT), detection for Inborn Error Metabolism etc.

  • Clinical Microbiology
    24 hours various specimens tests including Urine routine test, Bacterial culture & sensitivity test, Fungal culture & sensitivity test, Mycobacterium culture & sensitivity test, Rapid microbial antigen and antibody test
  • Histopathology
    • Histopathological diagnosis for biopsy and surgical specimens, including intraoperative frozen section consultation
    • Solid tumour ancillary testing, e.g., breast cancer markers, immunohistochemical and molecular markers for targeted therapies and immunotherapies.
    • Partnerships with NGS based cancer screening and surveillance studies across the world, e.g., Foundation One, Guardant360, etc.
  • Cytology
    Cell morphology study in body fluid, cervical pap smear, and fine needle aspiration study to assist in diagnosis and screening for malignancy.
  • Molecular Pathology – installed with high throughput automated genetic analyzers and use PCR technique to provide services including:
    • High Risk HPV examination, and HPV genotyping test,
    • HBV, TB with rifampicin resistance study and sexually transmitted diseases DNA examination
    • EBV DNA (Qualitative and Quantitative) Test
    • CMV DNA (Quantitative) Test
    •         Viral Rash Panel (PCR) Test
    •         Fever and Rash Panel (PCR) Test
    • 24 hours rapid services SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Test (RT-PCR for NPS, NS&TS), Respiratory and Gastrointestinal panel study for bacteria, virus and parasites
