FIRST TRIMESTER PREECLAMPSIA SCREENING
FIRST TRIMESTER PREECLAMPSIA SCREENING
What is Preeclampsia?
Preeclampsia is a serious pregnancy complication. According to the research, 2.1-3.8% of pregnant women were complicated with hypertensive disorder in Hong Kong, and at least 1/3 of them were pre-eclampsia. (Report of the Territory-wide Audit in Obstetrics & Gynaecology Territory wide Audit 2004, 2009, 2014).
Preeclampsia is traditionally diagnosed based on high blood pressure and presence of protein in urine after the 20th week of gestation. These patients may have headache, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, leg swelling and intra-uterine growth retardation.
Why is it important to undergo screening?
Preeclampsia is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for both the mother and fetus. Therefore, at every antenatal visit, we will check the blood pressure and conduct urinalysis for protein. Latest research has shown that early screening is effective in identifying mothers at risk for timely implementation of preventive measures which helps reduce the probability of developing preterm pre-eclampsia >60%.
Who is eligible?
All women with a singleton pregnancy between their 11+0 to13+6 weeks of gestation.
How to screen?
The screening is divided into 4 main parts:
Part 1: Record obstetric and medical history
Part 2: Measure blood pressure twice in both arms (Do not smoke, exercise, drink caffeinated beverages or alcohol within 30 minutes of measurement)
Part 3: Ultrasound scan to measure uterine artery blood flow between their 11+0 to13+6 weeks of gestation
Part 4: Take blood sample
After screening
The result of estimated risk of preterm preeclampsia will be available in approximately 7 working days. If you are screened high risk for preeclampsia, you will be invited to attend a follow-up visit for further counselling.
