Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection

Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection

Pathogen

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is caused by the respiratory syncytial virus, a single-stranded RNA virus. In Hong Kong, this virus can cause infections year-round.

Symptoms

RSV can lead to respiratory illnesses, including infections of the trachea, lungs, and middle ear. It is the leading cause of bronchitis and pneumonia in infants under one year old. Patients typically present with fever and other symptoms such as nasal congestion, cough, headache, decreased appetite, general malaise, and occasional otitis media.

Transmission

The virus spreads through direct contact with the secretions of infected individuals and via respiratory droplets. It can also be transmitted indirectly through contaminated hands, utensils, or by touching objects contaminated with nasal or throat secretions from infected patients.

Treatment

Annually, 2 to 3 out of every 100 infants under 6 months are hospitalized due to RSV. Infants are 16 times more likely to be hospitalized for RSV than for influenza. Hospitalized infants may require oxygen therapy and intravenous fluids if they cannot eat or drink normally. The threat of RSV is especially severe for premature infants or those with other health issues.

Prevention

The most effective preventive measures are to maintain good personal and environmental hygiene.

    1. Maintain Good Personal Hygiene
    • Wear Masks: It is recommended for individuals with fever or respiratory infection symptoms, as well as those working in or visiting high-risk areas, to wear masks. High-risk individuals should wear surgical masks in public settings.
    • Hand Hygiene: Frequently wash hands, especially before touching the face, eating, using the restroom, or after touching public facilities. Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitizer containing 70-80% alcohol.
    • Coughing and Sneezing: Cover the mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, dispose of the tissue properly, and then wash hands.
    • Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, get enough rest, and avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

    1. Maintain Good Environmental Hygiene
    • Regularly clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces, such as furniture and toys, using diluted household bleach or alcohol.
    • Ensure proper ventilation indoors and avoid crowded or poorly ventilated public places.

    1. Vaccination

Our clinic offers RSV preventive antibodies that can quickly provide protection against severe respiratory syncytial virus lung infections in infants. These antibodies can establish immediate protection and reduce the risk of hospitalization. Please inquire with our clinic staff for more information.
