MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) bases on interactions between radiofrequency waves and certain nuclei in the body under a strong magnetic field to produce multi-dimensional detailed anatomical images without the use of radiation.

Clinical Applications

  • Stroke: MRI is highly sensitive to detect early stroke with diffusion weighted imaging. We provide comprehensive stroke packages for stroke detection and assessment of vasculatures of the brain and neck.
  • Spine: MRI is an important diagnostic tool for patients suffering from neck and back pain, as it clearly shows the bones, disks, and spinal cord, as well as the spaces between the vertebral bones where nerves pass through.
  • Cancer: MRI plays an important role in cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment planning. With MRI, we can distinguish between normal and diseased tissue. It is also useful for revealing metastases.
  • Musculoskeletal: The use of MRI is prominent in the evaluation of musculoskeletal conditions, as it is sensitive in detecting problems in joint, muscle, tendon and ligament.
  • Heart: MRI of the heart may be performed for further evaluation of signs or symptoms that may suggest myocardial infarction, ischemia, cardiomyopathy or congenital heart disease.

Procedures

During an MRI, patient will rest on a table which will slide into a large tunnel-shaped scanner. Some exams require intravenous injection of contrast medium for better depiction of diseases. The procedure is painless and typically takes 30-45 minutes. As there will be constant drumming noise during scanning, ear plugs or ear phones will be provided. During the examination, patient can freely communicate with our staff via intercoms. One can eat or drink as usual after the examination.

Precautions

  • Patients with cardiac pacemakers and metallic implants may be contraindicated to MRI examination. Please seek advice from your doctor.
  • Restless patients and children may need sedation before examination.

Lithotripsy

Lithotripsy

The Stone Centre is equipped with an advance multi-function Extra-Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripter (Dornier MFL 5000) which is very effective with a proven high success rate for the treatment of most kidney and ureteric stones, as well as some selected gall bladder stones on an ambulatory basis.

Major Features

  • Non-invasive method
  • Water-bath free treatment
  • Anaesthesia free treatment
  • Outpatient / day patient treatment

 Scope of Services

  • Extra-Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)
  • Placement of ureteric stents
  • Insertion of retrograde ureteric catheters

Tomography

Computed Tomography (CT)

Computed Tomography (CT) is an imaging method that uses x-ray to create cross-sectional images of the body. New scanners further allow the volume of data to be reformatted in various planes or even as volumetric (3D) representations of body structures, providing fast and reliable diagnosis.

State-of-the-art Facilities

  • Dual-source 128-slice CT – Somatom Definition Flash with Stellar Detector
  • Dynamic Volume CT – Aquilion ONE Vision Edition
  • Single-source 128-slice CT – Somatom Definition Edge with Stellar Detector

Scope of Applications

  • General scan including head, body, spine and extremities
  • Angiogram (Coronary, Head and Neck, Lower limb…etc.)
  • Dental scan
  • Perfusion scan (Brain, Cardiac, Liver…etc.)
  • Dual energy
  • Low dose lung scan
  • Virtual colonoscopy
  • CT guided interventional procedures
