Mission
Embracing the spirit of Christ and through all-round education, the School aims at developing nurses committed to holistic care and evidence-based practice.
Beliefs in Nursing Education
Nursing as a caring practice, both relational and contextual, is more than a collection of techniques, but an integrated whole that requires the practitioner to develop character, knowledge and skill in order to contribute to the development of the practice.
Nursing education is part and parcel of the profession, aiming at nurturing students in the development and growth of their personal character and professional competency*. Nursing students are trained to master critical thinking and autonomous decision making, through active teaching and learning strategies, "evidence-based" practice and "reflective learning".
Nursing education is both collective and cumulative, and will profit from experiential learning in clinical practice setting. We believe in close correlation between teaching and learning, in an interactive process, for the mutual development of the teacher and learner.
*Nursing students are trained and assisted to achieve the standard core competencies stipulated by the "Hong Kong Nursing Council - Enrolled Nurse / Registered Nurse (General)".
Past and Present
The School was opened in 1983 for the training of enrolled nurses (EN) with full recognition from the Nursing Council of Hong Kong. In 2003 the School temporarily suspended the recruitment and training of Pupil Enrolled Nurses (PEN), but continued to be the venue for clinical practicum of different nurse training programmes run by local universities.
In March 2007, the School resumed the admission of PEN (Class 31), in collaboration with the School of Professional and Continuous Education of the University of Hong Kong (HKU SPACE). The jointly developed content of the programme, Diploma in General Nursing (Enrolled Nurse), was accredited by the Nursing Council in December 2008. A total of 95 students graduated in 2009 (PEN 31) and 2010 (PEN 32). Warm and memorable Graduation Ceremony was organized with the participation of family members of graduates. Highlights of the Ceremony included the capping ceremony, the passing of Nightingale’s Lantern from the Chief Nursing Officer, and the reading of the Nightingale’s Oath by all graduates.
The School decided to run its own programme in 2009 for PEN 33 (40 students) and subsequently PEN 34 (50 students) with enriched holistic learning experience. For example, School Opening Ceremony was organised. Students’ family members and senior staff of the Hospital were invited to witness this important milestone in the career life of the teenage students. A three week Residential Programme was arranged at the beginning of the first year, for orientation, team building and personal development. A spiritual care programme was also organized, throughout the two year course, with the support of the Hospital Pastoral Care Team.
The School has also been collaborating with The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) since 2006 in the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) Programme. We provide clinical supervision, clinical assessment and some classroom teaching for the 159 BSN students placed in our School between 2006 and 2010.
The School is also involved in the Higher Diploma EN Conversion Programmes of two tertiary institutions, OUHK (total 126 students since 2005) and HKU SPACE (total five students since 2009).
The Hospital is also sponsoring EN of the Hospital to take the four-year part-time HKU BN Programme, beginning 2009. Six ENs will be taking their clinical practicum in 2011 July.
We have eleven staff in the School, including one Senior Nursing Officer (School Principal), four Nursing Officer (Education), four Clinical Instructors and two Clerks.
Characteristics
Holistic Care
As we see nursing education involves the nurturing of students in the development and growth of their personal character as well as professional competency, we have offered a three week mandatory residential programme to all PEN students at the beginning of the first school term. Resident chaplain will provide guidance in development groups and counseling on personal matters. We wanted our students to understand and personally experience the meaning and practice of holistic care, so that they will in turn be able to provide holistic care to their patients.
Voluntary Service
The School has inherited the philosophy of Corporate Social Responsibility from the Hospital. We are committed to serve the community as volunteers with our strength in health promotion and education programme. For many years, our PEN students have been invited to serve as student helpers at clinical centres for clinical examinations of medical students / doctors. We also helped in numerous health fairs, and fund raising activities for promotion of health.
Professional Exchange
We learn from study of books and exchange of experiences. In the past two years, we have the privilege of sharing experience with a group of some 10 medical and nursing leaders from Ningboa, China (2010); and with a group of 30 nursing teachers and students from Korea Sunlin University (2009).
Looking Ahead
The existing accommodation of the School at Block E of the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital will be redeveloped in 2011. The School has moved to a new venue at C-Bons International Building in Ngau Tau Kok, Kowloon by end of October 2010. The new premises will provide the School with much more space for exclusive use. There are several good size class rooms and practical rooms, a quiet library with access to electronic library resources such as ebrary and Mosby’s Nursing Consult, and not least a spacious student lounge.
The School will continue to offer basic nursing training programmes, possibly at Higher Diploma level. We will explore opportunities to contribute to continuous nursing education for the several hundred staff nurses of the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, and beyond. Programmes in the pipeline include Traditional Chinese Medicine Nursing, Renal Nursing and Peri-operative Nursing.
