Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in Hong Kong, it is estimated that one in every 19 women* has breast cancer. Moreover, there is an increasing incidence of breast cancer among the younger age group. Hong Kong Baptist Hospital thus opens the new Breast Care Centre with a view to actively promoting breast health and providing holistic care to patients.

With a collaborative team comprising experienced specialists in surgery, nuclear medicine, oncology, radiology, pathology and plastic surgery, breast care nurses, chaplains and breast cancer patient support group, we are dedicated to providing expert screening, diagnosis, disease management, pre- and post-operative care as well as counseling through a multidisciplinary approach.

The earlier the breast cancer is diagnosed, the simpler the treatment and the higher the recovery chance. Women are advised to exam their breasts regularly to get familiar with the usual look and feel of them. If any changes like lump, change in size or shape of the breast or nipple, discharge from nipple or unusual pain are noticed, please consult doctor without delay. *According to the 2009 statistics published by Hong Kong Cancer Registry, Hospital Authority. Screening is recommended in the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer in early stage. The Centre is equipped with a range of sophisticated imaging machines, including Full Field Digital Mammography, Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for screening breast cancer. Screening by these advanced technologies and analysis by our experienced radiologists ensure an accurate diagnosis of conditions in early stage.

Mammography

Various latest investigation modalities including fine needle aspiration, core biopsy, Mammotome® and hookwire localization biopsy are available. Prompt selection and arrangement of the most suitable modalities are conducted to meet the special needs of each patient. Benign Breast Conditions   One-stop diagnosis, treatment and advice are available to patients who have benign breast conditions like including fibroadenoma, cysts, breast pain and so forth. Breast Cancer   In general, most of the lumps (around 90%) in breasts are benign*, some are yet malignant which grow in an uncontrolled way and damage normal breast tissues. Cancer may also spread to the other parts of the body through blood or lymph vessels.

We emphasize on holistic care with the adoption of multidisciplinary approach. A prompt management plan, which consists of pre-operative counseling, surgery, reconstruction, adjuvant therapy, wound care, physiotherapy and surveillance program, is tailor-made for each patient by our experienced specialists on a timely basis.
