Hong Kong, 11 August 2008 ─ Hong Kong Baptist Hospital (HKBH)'s Dr. Chiu Hin Kwong Heart Centre comes into operation today following its relocation to the new Block D. The brand new Heart Centre covers a total area of 5,800 sq ft, and has achieved significant improvement in design and technology. The layout aims to address the needs of patients, with great emphasis on two principles: (1) To enhance patient comfort; and (2) To improve operational efficiency.
Quality Patient-centred Care
The new Heart Centre in Block D has a spacious reception area, offering patients a much more comfortable waiting environment. There are two rooms for treadmill stress test, both of which offer a spectacular view of the Kowloon Peninsula. The sky ceiling and decorative wall paintings in the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory (Cath Lab) give a sense of tranquillity and vitality and help uplift the spirit. The special lighting effect introduced also adds to the warm and cosy ambience. With an advanced audio system, patients can play music of their choice during the procedure. Since patients will stay conscious throughout the process, it is very likely that they will feel under pressure, and such a design will surely help relieve their anxiety.
Maximised Efficiency and Productivity
The layout of the Heart Centre is well conceived with a goal to streamline the workflow. The Centre is basically divided into a diagnostic area and a therapeutic area in order to make for greater operational efficiency and productivity. Apart from the main Cath Lab, a fully equipped mini Cath Lab is also available for emergency procedures. The two Cath Labs are linked by a control room with intercom facilities for direct communication between the inside and outside of the labs, which further guarantees the safety of various procedures.
State-of-the-art Equipment
The main Cath Lab is built with a standard OT format. In addition to the high air flow and the anti-bacterial air filter, it is fitted with a medical gas pendant as used in standard operating theatres. The newest Digital Biplane Angiographic System can produce 3D coronary angiograms, and be integrated with Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS), which will provide more accurate data during coronary intervention procedures. Its most innovative "stent-boost" function can also capture clearer images of the stent position and thus increases efficiency and efficacy of the procedure.
Since its establishment in 1998, Dr. Chiu Hin Kwong Heart Centre has never been complacent about its services. In the years to come, the Heart Centre will continue to seek improvement and provide services of the highest quality to the community.
