Introduction

Gastroenterology and Hepatology Centre ( formerly named "Centre for Digestive Diseases" ) of Hong Kong Baptist Hospital aims at offering high quality medical services for treating various kinds of digestive diseases in order to meet the growing demands of Hong Kong citizens. Hong Kong people are running a hectic and stressful life, together with unhealthy diets, lack of health awareness and exercises, as a result, there is an increasing number of cases suffering from various digestive diseases including dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease. In view of this, the Centre is staffed by experienced specialists in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, through the use of the latest technologies like Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS) and working with other related specialists such as minimally invasive surgery and radiology, to provide a cutting edge and holistic treatment for patients suffering from complex digestive diseases.

Scope of Services

• Diagnosis and treatment for various gastrointestinal diseases – including long-term epigastric pain, acid reflux disease, diarrhea and constipation.
• Diagnosis and treatment for hepatitis and various liver diseases – including chronic hepatitis B and C infection, assessment of liver fibrosis, cirrhosis and related complications.
• Advanced endoscopic diagnosis and treatment for various digestive diseases – including endoscopic resection of early gastrointestinal tract tumour, diagnosis of digestive cancers and lung cancer metastases, endoscopic placement of metallic stent to relieve digestive tract and biliary tract obstruction.
• 24-hour urgent endoscopic treatment for various gastrointestinal emergencies - including treatment of acute peptic ulcer bleeding, treatment of acute cirrhosis related variceal bleeding, acute lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding, foreign body ingestion, endoscopic treatment of acute cholangitis.
• Comprehensive screening for various digestive cancers – including early gastric cancer, colonic cancer and pancreatic cancer.
• Acceptance of referral from primary care physicians and specialists for second opinion.

Equipment and Facilities

The Centre integrates with the Endoscopy and Endosonography Unit (EEU) of the Hospital to offer patients a one-stop and comprehensive examination. The EEU has always been kept updated with the latest advances and technologies in endoscopy. Recently, the Unit has adopted the High Definition Video Endoscopy System (HDVES), Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) system for the detection of early gastrointestinal tract cancers, and the most advanced Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS) system in Asia.

(1) High Definition Video Endoscopy System (HDVES)

The High Definition Video Endoscopy System combines high resolution endoscopic camera and high definition TV monitor for the examination of mucous membrane of the digestive tract. It helps to detect early pathological changes and cancers. The HDVES is connected with DVD recording system to record the whole examination procedure and important findings for future reference if needed.

(2) Narrow Band Imaging (NBI)

Narrow Band Imaging is a cutting-edge invention in endoscopy. During examination, doctors observe alimentary tract by the traditional white light and the narrow band light sources which can reveal the minute changes in the mucous membrane and vasculature. It can thus facilitate the detection of early pathological changes and cancer.

(3) Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS) System

Endoscopic Ultrasonography combines the functions of endoscopy with high frequency ultrasound examination. The ultrasound instrument is put deep inside the body of patient and it can get very close to the suspected lesion. Therefore, the diagnostic accuracy is much higher than other imaging technologies. EUS is now widely applied in various diseases including digestive diseases, surgical and oncological diseases, and in chest medicine (lung cancer staging). Under real time EUS monitoring, experienced endoscopist can perform Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) to obtain tissues from various organs for cytological analysis to confirm the diagnosis of early cancer or metastases. It is particularly useful in staging of cancer.

☆ Only patients who are referred by and booked directly through H.A. to the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Centre are entitled to the discount price. The Centre is only responsible for the procedure. The H.A. would be responsible for the follow up before and after the procedure.
