Endoscopy and Endosonography Unit (EEU) Introduction
Hong Kong Baptist Hospital introduced endoscopy service early in 1992. There are a total of five endoscopy rooms, which come equipped with advanced endoscopic devices and are staffed by a team of professional doctors and nurses. A range of advanced endoscopic equipments are adopted recently, they include a high definition video endoscopy system (HDVES), a narrow band imaging system (NBI) for detecting early gastrointestinal cancers, as well as the most advanced endoscopic ultrasonography system (EUS) in Asia. The EUS system is regarded worldwide as the most effective tool in diagnosing different gastrointestinal cancer diseases, pancreatic cancer and staging of lung cancer disease. With the newly introduced endoscopic equipments, the original Endoscopy Centre was renamed as “Endoscopy and Endosonography Unit” in July 2007.
The gastrointestinal endoscopy is the procedure that allows doctors to diagnose and treat various diseases along the gastrointestinal tract with the use of an endoscope. The doctors could apply different endoscopic instruments to obtain tissue diagnosis, to remove polyp, to treat peptic ulcer bleeding and to extract stones from the bile duct. Many conditions that required surgery in the past can now be treated by endoscopy.
