Sleep related breathing disorder is a prevalent medical condition affecting up to 2 - 4% of the adult population. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is the most common condition in sleep disordered breathing, it affects 4% of males and 2% of females among the middle-aged population as well as 25% of the elderly. Unfortunately, it remains largely under-diagnosed and under-treated in the community. Our Sleep Apnoea Clinic & Laboratory comes with the new state-of-the-art equipment and techniques like the Polysomnography System and the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment, which help doctors to deliver accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Clinical Features
OSA is a recognized contributing factor for hypertension,
ischaemic heart disease, stroke, heart failure, nocturnal arrhythmia and
sudden cardiac death. Symptoms of sleep apnoea syndrome include:
- habitual snoring
- excessive daytime sleepiness
- witnessed apnoea and choking during sleep
- increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality

Diagnosis Treatment
- Diagnosis
Overnight Polysomnography which records EEG, EOG, chin & leg EMG,
ECG, nasal airflow, abdominal and chest wall movements and digital oximetry.
- Treatment
Treatment is carried out by nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). Surgical
intervention to correct nasal obstruction, remove redundant palatal
tissues, tonsils and adenoids are sometimes indicated.
